Do I need a visa for Nepal and Bhutan?

Yes. Nepal visa is available on arrival at Kathmandu airport. Bhutan visa is arranged in advance through a licensed tour operator.

How difficult is the Tiger’s Nest hike?

Moderate. The round trip takes 4–5 hours with a steady uphill climb. Horses are available for part of the ascent.

What wildlife can be seen in Chitwan?

One-horned rhinoceros, spotted deer, wild boar, crocodiles, and a variety of birds. Bengal tigers are present but rarely spotted.

What currency is used in Nepal and Bhutan?

Nepal uses the Nepali Rupee (NPR). Bhutan uses the Ngultrum (BTN), pegged 1:1 with the Indian Rupee.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu

The first day of the program starts with an arrival at Kathmandu International Airport and ends with free time to explore the city. Our representative will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel in Kathmandu. The city of Kathmandu has an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters above sea level.

The valley lies between green hills which extend around its borders and snow peaks which appear in the distance. The guests can use their free time after check-in for the rest of the evening. The guests can choose to stay at the hotel or explore the active streets that is near your hotel.

The three main UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Kathmandu Valley will be your daytime exploration for today. 

Your first visit is to Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most sacred Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple complex which sits beside the Bagmati River attracts pilgrims who come from all South Asian regions. The riverbanks serve as a place where you can see traditional rituals and cremation ceremonies being performed.

Next, visit Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest spherical stupas in the world. The white dome and golden spire dominate the skyline. Monks and locals walk clockwise around the stupa while prayer flags flutter in the wind.

The historic royal square Patan Durbar Square which lies in the city of Lalitpur, displays its Newari architectural beauty through its ancient temples and courtyards. The stone carvings and metal artwork display the artistic skills developed through many centuries.

Return to your hotel in the evening.

Your third day of travel will start with a drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Your scenic drive to Pokhara will start after you finish your breakfast. The journey takes about 6 to 7 hours depending on road conditions. The route takes you through rivers and terraced hillsides and small rural towns.

Pokhara lies at an elevation of 822 meters and its peaceful environment provides views of the Himalayan mountains. On clear days, Phewa Lake shows reflections of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre peaks. You can spend your evening at the lakeside to experience total tranquility.

The group needs to wake up early to drive to Sarangkot for sunrise viewing. The hilltop viewpoint shows visitors the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges which shine with morning light.

Return to the hotel for breakfast. Later, you will take a one-hour boat ride on Phewa Lake. You need to visit Davis Falls which has a unique waterfall that drops into an underground tunnel. You should explore Gupteshwor Cave which is situated across from the falls and then walk to Damsadi Suspension Bridge. You will stay overnight at your hotel in Pokhara.

After breakfast, the group will travel to Chitwan which is located in the southern plains of Nepal. The group will check into their jungle lodge after arrival and proceed to have lunch.

You can participate in a village walk or Tharu community cultural program which takes place during the afternoon. The lodge will provide dinner and overnight accommodation for the guests.

The group will begin their jeep safari after breakfast to explore the park’s interior. Visitors will have the chance to see rhinos which graze in the grasslands together with different kinds of deer and bird species.

The entire day is dedicated to exploring the jungle of Chitwan National Park. After breakfast the group will begin their jeep safari which will take them into the deep areas of the park. The area provides opportunities to see rhinos which graze on grasslands and different types of deer and various bird species.

The Rapti River offers canoe rides which you can enjoy while visiting the elephant breeding center. The guided nature walk provides visitors with the opportunity to study the regional ecosystem. The package includes all meals for the duration of the stay. The guests will spend the night at the jungle lodge.

The group will return to Kathmandu after they finish their breakfast. The journey takes around 5 to 6 hours. The guests will arrive at the hotel in the afternoon to complete their check-in process. The guests have free time during the evening to either go shopping or spend time at their hotel.

The Day 8 activities begin when you fly to Paro and travel by vehicle to Thimphu. The airport transfer will take you to your flight which goes to Paro Bhutan after you finish your breakfast. The flight provides passengers with breathtaking sights of the Himalayan mountain range.

The Thimphu sightseeing tour starts after your lunch at the hotel. The National Textile Museum provides visitors with an opportunity to explore Bhutanese weaving traditions. The Simply Bhutan Museum offers visitors a chance to discover the authentic cultural heritage of the area.

The Memorial Chorten serves as a memorial structure which commemorates the third king of Bhutan. The next destination is Buddha Point which is located at Kuensel Phodrang and has a huge Buddha statue that provides a view of the entire valley.

The plan for tonight includes having dinner and stay at Thimphu.

The journey from Thimphu to Punakha will take us through Dochu La Pass which is located at an elevation of 3080 meters. The group will travel to Punakha after they finish their breakfast. 

On clear days, the Himalayan snow-covered peaks are visible as they extend across the entire horizon. The warmer Punakha Valley leads to Punakha Dzong which locals refer to as the Palace of Great Happiness.

The fortress monastery stands as one of the most beautiful buildings in Bhutan because it lies at the point where two rivers meet. After eating lunch at a nearby restaurant, we will proceed to Chimi Lhakhang which serves as a fertility temple dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kunley.

The dinner and overnight accommodation will take place in Paro.

The journey from Punakha to Paro takes approximately 4 hours to cover a distance of 125 kilometers. The driver will take us back to Paro after we finish our breakfast through the scenic river valleys and mountain roads.

The Paro package includes dinner and an overnight stay. 

Travelers should make a stop at Simtokha Dzong, which stands as one of Bhutan’s oldest dzongs and currently serves as a language school. The next destination is Ta Dzong which has the National Museum of Bhutan.

Then walk downhill to Rinpung Dzong which translates to “Fortress of the Heap of Jewels.” The dzong displays traditional Bhutanese architectural styles. The Paro lies at a height of 2195 meters above sea level. The hotel provides dinner and overnight accommodation.

After breakfast, prepare for one of the highlights of your Bhutan cultural tour. Hike to Paro Taktsang, which people commonly refer to as Tiger’s Nest Monastery.

The hike takes 4 to 5 hours to complete its circular path through the mountains. The monastery clings to a cliff which lies at an elevation of 3,120 meters above sea level.

According to legend, Guru Rinpoche meditated here in the 8th century, introducing Buddhism to Bhutan. After descending, you can have lunch at a restaurant which serves local food.

The group proceed to visit Kyichu Lhakhang which stands as one of Bhutan’s oldest temples. The group can spend the evening walking through Paro town to visit the various local markets. 

The group will have dinner before spending the night in Paro.

You will go to Paro airport after you finish breakfast to take your flight to Kathmandu. The remaining time of the day is available for you to engage in personal activities or relax or complete your shopping.

Visit Swayambhunath which is an ancient hilltop stupa that provides visitors with complete panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley.

The royal palace complex of the Malla kings now known as Kathmandu Durbar Square features temples, courtyards and traditional architectural structures.

At a later time, you can experience a walking tour that covers Thamel and Asan Bazaar. The vibrant markets serve as ideal locations to purchase souvenirs, spices, handicrafts and local snacks.

It’s time for your onward flight as we transfer to the airport, and your trip to Nepal and Bhutan finally comes to an end with unforgettable memories.
