Trek Overview

Overview

A 12-day journey combining Nepal’s cultural heritage with Tibet’s spiritual sites, moving from Kathmandu to Pokhara and on to Lhasa. Includes UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu, Pokhara’s lakes and mountain views, and Lhasa’s palaces, temples, and monasteries.

Tibet Permits & Entry

  • A Tibet Travel Permit is mandatory for all foreign visitors and must be arranged through an authorized travel agency — independent travel is not permitted
  • A China visa is also required; entry arrangements from Nepal are handled through a licensed agency
  • Overland entry via the Kerung border is the most common route, allowing gradual altitude adjustment; flying directly to Lhasa is faster but gives less time to acclimatize
  • Tibet Travel Permit + China visa, arranged via authorized agency only

Best Time to Visit Tibet

April through October, when weather and travel routes are most favorable. Spring and autumn offer clearer skies and fewer crowds; summer brings festivals and green valleys.

Altitude Awareness

Lhasa sits at approximately 3,650m. Recommended precautions: hydrate well, pace activities slowly, and rest on the first day in Lhasa to allow acclimatization.

Transportation

Travel within Tibet is by private vehicle arranged through a travel agency. Lhasa’s historic districts are walkable; a guide with transport is recommended for temple and monastery visits outside the city.

Sightseeing Tips

Major sites like the Potala Palace have daily visitor caps — book in advance and arrive early for a less crowded visit.

FAQs

Do I need a permit to visit Tibet?

Yes, a Tibet Travel Permit is required for all foreign visitors and must be arranged in advance.

Is Tibet safe for tourists?

Yes, when traveling through an authorized guide/agency.

Can I travel independently in Tibet?

No — independent travel is not permitted. All visitors must book through an approved operator with guide and transport arranged.

When is the best time to visit Tibet?

April through October.

Should I go overland or fly from Nepal to Tibet?

Overland via the Kerung border allows gradual altitude adjustment. Flying direct to Lhasa is faster but gives the body less time to adapt.

What’s the ideal trip length for Nepal and Tibet combined?

Around 8–9 days minimum, to allow time for border crossing, acclimatization, and sightseeing in Lhasa. Shorter trips risk feeling rushed and increase altitude strain.

Why isn’t a 6-day Nepal-Tibet tour recommended?

Six days is workable for Lhasa alone, but too tight when combined with Nepal — border crossing, long drives, and acclimatization all require more time. At least 8–9 days is recommended.

Do I need separate visas or permits?

Yes — a China visa and a Tibet Travel Permit are both required. Entry via Nepal is arranged through a licensed travel agency.

Can altitude sickness be a concern on this trip?

Yes. Gradual ascent (e.g. via the Kerung overland route), pacing, and proper hydration reduce risk.

Can first-timers to high altitude handle this trip?

Yes, with a gradual itinerary (around 9 days) and by following acclimatization guidance.
