The Langtang Valley trek is a very stunning yet overlooked gem of Nepal. It sees fewer tourists as compared to the Everest and Annapurna region of Nepal, but it offers just as much to explore and enjoy.
From the classic Himalayas bordering Tibet to the dense, lush deep jungles, and from the traditional Himalayan pastureland to the enticing remote villages, the Langtang Valley trek offers you all, along with the warm Buddhist culture and hospitality of the Tamang and Sherpa communities.
Located just 30 km outside of Kathmandu, this adventure can be completed within just a week. It will take you deep within the diverse land of the Langtang National Park, home to exquisite creatures such as the red panda, Himalayan Thar, wild bears, sheep, and many more.
Therefore, if you are one of those envisioning a Nepal trip away from the usual route, easily accessible and relatively short in length, but still is able to offer an amazing hiking experience, then the Langtang Valley trek is the one you are looking for.
Another big plus of the 8 days Langtang Valley trek is that it doesn’t require ascending over 5000 m, making it also suitable for those who like to avoid high-altitude mountain adventure.
Additionally, there is no need to take a domestic mountain flight during this trek. We would also like to assure you that the Langtang Valley has now been completely restored and rebuilt with enhanced and expanded infrastructure after the 2015 earthquake. It is now much safer and secure than ever.
The Langtang Valley trek itinerary starts from Syabrubesi, a Rasuwa town near Tibet. From here, you will start hiking into the very enticing Langtang Valley, traversing the forest and gorge-like terrain.
The valley then opens up with high-altitude meadows taking you to Kyanjin Gompa at the base of Langtang Lirung. Here lies the highlight of our Langtang Valley trek, a climb to 4773 m high Kyanjin Ri.
It is the mesmerizing viewpoint where you can see the imposing Himalayas of Yala Peak (5500 m), Tsergo Peak (5033 m), Langtang Lirung, Gangchempo (6387 m), Naya Kang (5846 m), Dorje Lhakpa (6966 m), Kimshung (6781 m), Langshisa Ri (6427 m), Yurba(6035 m), Langtang II/Ghonge Liru (6586 m) getting kissed by the rising sun.
After this exhilarating experience, you will descend down through the same route back to Kathmandu.
Our incredible Langtang Valley trek welcomes all, even those who have a limited schedule and basic fitness level. This trek is especially appealing during the spring and autumn months.
Our Langtang Valley trek will begin today with a long Himalayan road travel to Syabrubesi. Our local bus will wind us away from the chaotic Kathmandu through Thankot basin, after which it will descend us to Trishuli Valley.
The Pasang Lhamu Highway will then climb us up to the traditional rural settlements of Rani Pauwa and Dhunche with the Ganesh, Annapurna, and Manaslu up in the sky.
At Dhunche, the military officials will check and register our Langtang Valley trek permit. Next, the bumpy road from here on will ascend inside the Langtang National Park toward Syabrubesi of Rasuwa District near Tibet.
Activity: Drive 7 hours
Max. Altitude: 1,550m/5,085ft. (Syabrubesi)

After a peaceful, organic breakfast, we will begin our trekking adventure, taking on the trail high above the Langtang Khola. Eventually, we will have to cross this river over a suspended bridge.
The trail will be up and down, leading us through Dhomen (1620 m) village. The route from here on will constantly go up, leading our way through the ancient conifer jungle to Bamboo (1970 m).
With the glorious Langtang Himal in front, we will now tackle the trail that has turned into numerous stone steps. Ascending these steps for around two hours, we will be in Rimche Village (2400 m).
The route will now turn gently steep, taking us around two hours to reach Lama Hotel. Enjoy the impressive panorama of Gengo Lirung (6571 m) lying straight in front of your lodge.
Activity: Trekking 6 hours
Max. Altitude: 2,500m/8,202ft. (Lama Hotel)

Our Langtang Valley trek will continue beside the marvelous blue waters of the Langtang Khola. Keep an eye out for the red panda and some langur while walking through the dense jungle trail.
The trail will shortly advance us to Ghumanchok, where another military checkpost will review our permit. The path ahead will keep elevating us as we pass through Chunama Village.
Langtang Lirung seems pretty massive from here. The steeply gradient trail will now take us to Ghoratabela (2800 m). It used to serve as a stable for the horses, and so the name.
The route now widens with high-altitude alpine meadows leading us down through Thangshyap, Ghumba, and Chyamki to the Langtang Village.
This large village was once completely destroyed due to the 2015 earthquake. Now, it has entirely changed its shape, and a chorten has been erected to honor the memory of the earthquake victims.

Today’s hike won’t be that long, and we will be reaching the inhabited valley settlement of Kyanjin Gompa, the highlight of our Langtang Valley trek.
A little further from Langtang Village is Mundu (3543 m), a newly made large settlement where most of the people have relocated after the earthquake.
We will pass by countless chortens and Mani Walls displaying the influence of Buddhism in the region. The once verdant woodlands have now turned fully into scattered shrubs and grasses as we progress through Singdun and Yemphu.
Soon, we will be at Kyanjin Gompa, positioned in the stunning setting between Kinsung, Dorje Lhakpa, Langtang Lirung, Gangchempo, Kyanjin Ri, Langshisha Ri, and Chorakri Ri.
We will take it easy today and take adequate rest as we are near the altitude of almost 4000 m. We can, however, take a small walk to the cheese factory, which was established on the initiative of the Swiss Organization.

We have planned to reach the highest elevation of our Langtang Valley trek, the 4773 m altitude of the Kyanjin Ri, situated a little further up above the Kyanjin Gompa.
Since winds blow at high speed at such an altitude around afternoon, we will be setting out to ascend this ridge before even the sun comes up on the horizon.
The trail will be pretty much simple, and in about two hours, we will already be standing atop the ridge summit. Watch Yala Peak, Tsergo Peak, Langtang Lirung, Gangchempo, Naya Kang, Dorje Lhakpa, Kimshung, Langshisa Ri, Yurba, Langtang II/Ghonge Liru, and the stunning base of the Langtang Lirung Glacier getting kissed by the emerging sun.
We will now walk back down to Kyanjin Gompa to explore its gorgeous and culturally rich monastery. We will also meet the monks and may also take part in the monastic rituals.

Having seen the Kyanjin Gompa, it will be quite difficult for us to leave the area. However, we will have to bring a close to our Langtang Valley trek, so early morning after a silent breakfast, we will start to head down.
The familiar path passing through the enticing towns of Mundu, Ghumba, Thangshyap, Ghoratabela, and Ghumanchok will take us to Lama Hotel, where we will enjoy the beautiful, comfortable atmosphere of the area.

We will be walking for the last time on our Langtang Valley trek. For the beautiful conclusion of the adventure, we can take a different route back through Sherpagaon, or we can hike down through the same known route through Rimche and Dhomen villages to reach Syabrubesi.
Activity: Trekking 5-6 hours

We will make an early morning departure from Syabrubesi on a local bus to reach Kathmandu by early evening. Once again, we will take the Himalayan road through Dhunche, Rani Pauwa, and then enter Trishuli Valley to get into Kathmandu.
For a road trip between Kathmandu and Syabrubesi, you can also request for a private vehicle arrangement in advance. For a minimal surcharge, we will organize a jeep, car, or bus for your ride, depending on how many people are in your group.
You can choose a private vehicle transfer just once, either from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu, or for the whole round trip.

Note:
If you have a private group and prefer a personalized experience, we can organize a custom trip tailored to your requirements and group size, running it any day you choose.
Because of its nearness to Kathmandu and its short length, the Langtang Valley trek is open every season in Nepal. However, the most irresistible time would be in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November).
In spring, the weather is not excessively hot, and the forest comes to life with wildlife and colorful rhododendrons. In autumn, the sky is subtly blue with the clearest Himalayas opening up in the sky.
Winter (December-February) is also a captivating time with a little thin snow at Kyanjin Gompa, but with sunny skies overhead during the day. The summer (June-August) is even more or less frequented due to monsoon rain, sometimes hindering the trail to Kyanjin Gompa.
The Langtang Valley trek is a level II grade B hiking adventure in the mountains. Its trekking trail presents low difficulty and an uncomplicated nature.
The mountain path you will follow during the Langtang Valley trek itinerary is also pretty simple, nontechnical, with some gentle ascent and descent.
The 8 days adventure will ultimately take you to the maximum elevation of 4773 m at Kyanjin Ri. The ascent of this ridge is also manageable for all with a moderate fitness level.
However, a few days will occur above 3000 m, which may result in slight physical discomfort related to the altitude. Therefore, our Langtang Valley trek is genuinely a relaxed hiking adventure that fits every backpacker irrespective of age and fitness.
The Langtang Valley trek is a perfect adventure for all mountain lovers, whether you are a seasoned backpacker or a newbie. It is also a great nature escape for families with children that allows you to step away from the chaos of the digital world and enjoy the beauty of the pristine nature.
Plus, the 8 days Langtang Valley trek is an affordable journey, making it ideal for those on a budget but don’t want to miss out on an incredible experience.
However, it’s important to remember that expecting mothers, those with heart and lung diseases, thrombosis, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, or any blood-clotting disorder must take their doctor’s approval first to participate in our Langtang Valley trek.
The Prime Holidays team has created a very comfortably paced Langtang Valley trek itinerary. Each day, altitude gain will be right under 1000 m, thus allowing each one of you to adapt very well to the high, dry air of the Langtang Valley and Kyanjin Gompa.
We have also placed one extra night at Kyanjin Gompa, so if you decide to ascend the Kyanjin Ri summit, you will be 100% acclimatized. Still, not all but some of you may feel the minor discomfort related to the altitude.
Some may have fatigue and dizziness, while some may have a headache and nausea. Some may have difficulty sleeping, while some may experience a little bit of shortness of breath.
All these are minor occurrences of the AMS, which will resolve if you take a few hours’ rest and drink lots of fluid. However, if these symptoms don’t go away, then you will have to respect our guide’s decision and go down or delay your ascent for a day or two.
To entirely prevent the AMS, please take enough rest, sleep early and for long hours, drink lots of fluid, and proceed at a steady pace. Taking Diamox will not be necessary as it is a moderate altitude trek.
Mountain trekking is an adventure, whether it’s easy or moderate. Every mountain hike will test your physical and mental fitness and resilience, for which you will have to be ready in advance.
And so for our Langtang Valley trek, as well as the trails and daily hikes are short, but still, it is a mountain trail where you will have to deal with the frequent ascents and descents.
Therefore, one to two months before you set off for the 8 days Langtang Valley trek, we suggest you build your heart, lungs, and leg strength through exercises like swimming, walking, rope skipping, playing any kind of sports, and ascending and descending stairs.
You can also go for simple hikes with a backpack and try to select the terrain like in the Nepalese mountains. Also, adjust your expectations as they will be comfortable enough in the Langtang Valley trek route, but not like at your home.
One of the great advantages of the Langtang Valley trek is its flexibility to blend with other amazing locations nearby. If you have some extra time and think you can add a few days, here are some great options:
During our Langtang Valley trek, we offer you accommodations in excellent tea houses along the route. The tea house will offer you a room with two beds, and they will be clean with a private toilet.
At some places, however, you may have to settle for a shared toilet. The beauty of all the teahouses is that you will be able to share moments after the trek in a cozy communal area.
Please note that we won’t be handling your accommodations and meals in Kathmandu. On the trek, we will take care of all your meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), and the food will be fantastic, especially the Dal Vat. Drinks and beverages will be your responsibility.
For your travel arrangements, we will provide pick-up and drop-off service in our private vehicle between your hotel and the local bus park. We will use the local public bus for transport between Kathmandu and Syabrubesi. On your request, we can also provide a private vehicle for you.
When you are in Kathmandu, you can purchase the local SIM card of Ncell or Namaste Telecom for constant mobile communication during your Langtang Valley trek.
Both these networks offer excellent signals in the lower Langtang Valley, along with the 4G/LTE service for your internet connectivity via mobile. However, you may have intermittent network signal from Ghodatabela onwards.
If you don’t want to go through the hassle of buying the physical SIM card, then you can also purchase their eSIM online.
WiFi, on the other hand, is decent in the entire Langtang Valley, and you can use your social media without any interruption in Kyanjin Gompa as well. However, be ready for an extra charge, which may be charged on an hourly basis by the lodge owner.
Electricity has reached Lama Hotel, and beyond Lama Hotel, you will have the energy through solar or hydroelectric power. So, you can charge any of your electric gadgets comfortably in your room, which again may be charged at an extra price per device basis.
It would be wise if you bring your own power bank or solar charger for the Langtang Valley trek.
Travel insurance has been made mandatory for all types of mountain hiking adventures in Nepal, and so it is also essential for the Langtang Valley trek; otherwise, you won’t have the permit needed.
It is because you never know what’s gonna happen to you in the mountains. From the unexpected slip to serious AMS, you may sometimes need to be airlifted by helicopter for immediate medical attention.
Therefore, for our 8 days Langtang Valley trek, we suggest you get a very thorough travel insurance policy that specifies clearly the helicopter evacuation for emergencies up to the elevation of 5000 m.
Ensure also that you have medical and accidental costs covered by your insurer, along with any liabilities that may occur during the trek, including your baggage loss, robbery, theft, added days, trek postponements, and cancellation.
Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has updated its rules regarding essential trekking permits, and for the Langtang Valley trek, we will need the National Park entry permit for the Langtang National Park along with the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card.
For foreign tourists, the cost of the Langtang National Park Permit will be NPR 3000 per person, while for SAARC Nationals, the fee will be NPR 1500 per person, and for Nepali nationals, it will be NPR 100 per person.
Regarding the cost of the TIMS Card, the fee will be NPR 2000 per person for foreign tourists and NPR 1000 for SAARC nationals. Children below ten, however, don’t need these permits.
Please understand that the NTB or Trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAAN) will issue the TIMS Card only to government-registered travel agencies, not individuals, and you must have a local registered guide with you during the trek. Prime Holidays will handle these permits for you, and the fees are included in our trip cost.
