Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek journey is one of the best adventures that takes you deep into Nepal’s eastern Himalayas. The Tibetan phrase “Kang-chen-dzö-nga,” which means “The Five Treasures of the Great Snow,” is where the name Kanchenjunga originates. It refers to the five tall peaks of the Kanchenjunga, which are believed to hold hidden treasures from the god, including gold, silver, gems, grain, and sacred texts.
This 24-day Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek itinerary is a best alternative to the Everest Base Camp (EBC) and Annapurna Base Camp (ABC)routes, offering stunning Himalayan beauty and landscapes for those who prefer less crowded and less-explored hiking trails. This tour takes you through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area in the Taplejung district of the Kanchenjunga area, which offers unspoiled environment and a private, real mountain living experience.
Your trip will have a fantastic flight to Biratnagar and then a beautiful drive to Birtamod. The next day, you will drive to Taplejung, which is not only the trek’s starting point but also the entry point to the stunning Kanchenjunga region. From here, you will walk on the trail through a mix of terraced farmlands, lush subtropical jungles, rocky slopes, high mountain passes, and alpine meadows.
On the way to the trek, you will encounter and stay in the traditional villages of Chiruwa, Sekathum, Gyabla, and Kambachen. It will be an experience of their distinct cultures and lifestyles. The next destination after Lhonak is Pangpema, Base Camp North Kanchenjunga, which is located at 5143 meters above sea level.
Upon reaching the camp, you will have the incredible experience that will surprise you visually and emotionally with its breathtaking natural beauty. In fact, you can see the five summits of Kanchenjunga with altitudes varying from 7,200 to 8,586 meters, as well as the glaciers, icefalls, and other mountains, for example, Kanchenjunga South, Makalu, and Kumbhakarna, if it is clear. Being close to the third-highest mountain on Earth will definitely make you experience the gigantic nature and strength of the Himalayas.
Stepping into the next phase, you will also cross Sele La Pass and walk through destinations like Sele Base Camp, Tseram, and Ramche to reach Oktang at the South Kanchenjunga Base Camp, where you can admire the jaw-dropping vistas of the Kanchenjunga South and Main Peaks, making you feel humble and reflective from the very moment you are experiencing it.
After exploring both south and north Kanchenjunga Base Camps, you will retrace your steps back from Tseram, Tortong, and Ranipul to end your trekking adventure in the eastern region of Nepal on this 24-day Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek itinerary journey. Even though it challenges you, at the same time, it also deeply rewards you with spectacular vistas of nature.

Note:
If you have a private group and prefer a personalized experience, we can organize a custom trip tailored to your requirements and group size, running it any day you choose.
The best times to embark on the 24-day Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek itinerary are during Nepal’s two main trekking seasons: autumn and spring. At springtime, rhododendron forests bloom, and alpine flora decorates the trails, offering a pleasant experience while trekking. Similarly, the weather is sunny and mild, allowing for great views of Kanchenjunga and other snow-covered peaks.
In the same way, the skies in the fall are mostly clear and blue, thus providing dry and stable weather with moderate temperatures, which is an absolutely ideal atmosphere for a trek at high altitudes in the mountains. You can capture stunning photos and videos of the mountains and lush greenery.
This Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek trip begins in Taplejung, which is 1420 meters above sea level. The highest point on this tour will be Pangpema, the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, which is 5143 meters (16,873 feet) above sea level.
The second-highest point you will reach on this excursion is Oktang, which is the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp at 4730 meters (15,518 feet). Moreover, the total walking distance you will cover on this 24-day adventure is 210 to 230 km (130 to 143 miles), which includes the acclimatization walks as well.
The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is considered a challenging one. On this trip, there are high passes to be crossed, for instance, the Sele La and Sinion La Passes, where the climbs and descents are steep. Besides that, longer hours of trekking can also make the travel tiring and demanding.
Another barrier on this journey is altitude sickness, which occurs during a walk at an altitude above 3500 meters. Headaches, insomnia, fatigue, and loss of appetite are some of the signs and symptoms of the sickness that you should be aware of. To escape such a risk, you should acclimate properly, take your breaks regularly, keep your body hydrated, and go up slowly.
On this Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, you will need to walk approximately 5 to 6 hours on a regular basis. However, the minimum hours per day will be three to four hours on the seventeenth day of the trek, when you hike from Ramche Village to Tseram.
Likewise, the maximum hours per day you will spend walking can be seven to eight hours on day 13 when you trek to Pangpema (North Base Camp) in a round trip from Lhonak, day 16 when you trek to Tseram crossing Sinion La Pass, and day 18 when you trek to Oktang (South Base Camp) from Tseram in a round trip.
On this Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek package, Prime Holidays will lodge you at a 3-star hotel while your itinerary is in Kathmandu. Once your trek begins, you will stay in locally run lodges or tea houses that provide basic facilities such as bed, blanket, and pillow. There may be availability of private rooms with hot showers in the lower areas.
When you are trekking, you will get three meals each day, with breakfast and dinner at your accommodation, while lunch will be at a random teahouse while walking on the journey. Food options that are served in tea houses include daal bhat, noodles, soup, thukpa, dhindo, momo, potato dishes, and others. Drinks from soft to hard beverages are also available, which will be your own personal expenses.
These are three mandatory permits which you will require for this package of Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek:
Restricted Area Permit (RAP): You will require this permit because the Kanchenjunga region is located in a restricted border area. Depending on the location, it will cost $20 for the first four weeks and $25 per person per week for any additional week.
Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP): This permit allows you to enter the protected Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, home to unique wildlife and landscapes, and costs approximately NPR 2000 per trekker.
Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) Card: This is another important permit that you should obtain because it will store your information for safety and emergency needs. It will cost you approximately NPR 2000.
Regardless of how short or demanding the trek is, travel insurance is a necessity anytime you trek in the Himalayas. It is common knowledge that the rocky trails and high elevations create dangerous conditions that can lead to emergencies, which can be extremely expensive. Travel insurance will cover all medical, accident, and mishap expenses, including helicopter evacuation costs, which can be pretty costly.
There are also a few plans that include hotel accommodations or travel upgrades, as needed. Selecting a comprehensive safety plan places a significant emphasis on your safety, allowing you to get the most enjoyment from your experience.
Immerse yourself in an epic 24-day unforgettable journey of the remote Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek in the East Nepal Himalaya. This remote and secluded trek will take you through immaculate forest, terraces made from farming, and alpine passes at a height, leading you to both the North and the South Base Camps of the world’s third-highest peak.
On the way, you’ll receive the kind support of the different mountain communities and also enjoy rich hospitality as well as some of the most stunning views of the tallest peaks, glaciers, and steep mountains. This trek, which is far from the crowds of Everest and Annapurna, is all about tranquility, the richness of the culture, and the raw beauty of nature, which is an experience that both challenges and rewards you equally.

The trek takes place in eastern Nepal, near the border with India (Sikkim) and Tibet, and surrounds Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak (8,586 meters).
Kanchenjunga is the world’s third-highest peak, located in a secluded, pristine wilderness, and cherished spiritually by its inhabitants.
This adventure typically lasts 20 to 26 days, which includes acclimatization days, travel to the trailhead, and visits to both the south and north base camps of Kanchenjunga.
Trekkers should be in good physical shape and start exercising regularly at least two or three months before the trip, as the route is full of challenges such as steep climbs and long walks.
Indeed, the trek is difficult, since it takes you deep into off-trail areas, crosses high passes, and encounters unpredictable weather. As a result, this 24-day expedition involves both mental and physical preparation.
Of course, but the electricity is limited along the trail. Therefore, it’s best to bring solar chargers and power banks to ensure your device is always on and ready for action when needed.
Like electricity, communication is also minimal on the trail. However, you can use satellite phones or landlines in some teahouses. You can also purchase a reliable SIM card upon arrival to stay connected with your family members while traveling far from home, ensuring they are worry-free.
